Chi-Town

We had a fantastic time visiting friends in Chicago, where the adults (Luke, Cindy, Darcie and Chris) barely outnumbered the children (Eléa, Reese and Sylvia).  Three children is hard work!  Reese, 16 months, had a blast with 'baby' Eléa and bestowed frequent hugs and helped us with feeding Eléa regularly and sharing her water.  Eléa reciprocated with stealing the water bottle and some toys, but also pushing Reese around in a cart.... (video to follow in upcoming post).  Sylvia entertained adults and little ones alike and is a bundle of non stop energy.  She has grown up so much, and makes me look forward to, with perhaps some trepidation, when Eléa can start telling us what she thinks.

Out trip confirmed our suspicions that two children is a lot of children and cemented Eléa's status as a fatty-bo-batty.  At almost one year, Eléa weighs in at 25 pounds, while 16 month old Reese was a svelte 19 pounds... More Chicago pictures from Darcie's much nicer camera to follow.

As we said goodbye to NYC, Eléa embarked on her first road trip with stops in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Chicago and St. Louis.  Being that she is a born New Yorker, she is not the biggest fan of cars or car seats.  Consequently, we planned our road trips to coincide with Eléa's naps.  2-3 hours driving in the morning, followed by a 2 -3 hour stop at a rest area and then another 2-3 hours.... We have some documentation of our times in the rest areas of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois.

Visitors!

With May came visitors from Venezuela (thanks to Eléa's amazing great grandmother!) and Ithaca, NY via Hong Kong.  Eléa enjoyed playing with baby Rosalie, and got to practice her gentle touches... she also took four solo steps, but luckily didn't realize what she had accomplished and so has yet to repeat.  May also brought four new teeth (two on the bottom and two on the top) and the debut of Eléa's summer, and super cute, rompers.

Here's some video of my special gentle touch:

Photographs: late April and early May, 2011

Eléa, circa ten months of age.  Eléa is getting to be a big girl now.  The circumference of one of her thighs is the same as that of an adult neck.  She looks poised to enter a career as a infant wrestler; which is all well and good, as we enjoy wrestling with her.

Abuelo and abuela recently came to pay her a visit, as you will be able to tell by looking at some of the photos in this blog.  They took her to Central Park where Eléa frolicked (or, more accurately, staggered about) on the lawn and had her first taste of sand at the toddlers' playground.  Mmmmmm.....freshly dredged from the East River riverbed!

She is beginning to add a few "d" and "n" consonant-like sounds to her now well-established repertoire, which consists primarily of "m," "b," and a number of vowels that she is very happy to practice in the loudest voice possible at 6:00 in the morning.  I have no doubt in my mind that our (now) sleepless neighbors are as happy as we are to witness her linguistic progress.  Why just the other day the lady from the apartment next door gave little Eléa a gift: a very thick 8 by 14 foot sheet of insulation material.  I thought it was a strange gift, but it was very kind of her none the less.

Eléa has begun to walk with the help of a small pushcart.  Purchased at Ikea and probably named after a mountain in northern Scandinavia—something like Mønt Swødøsh Meøtbøls—the cart has become Eléa's newest vehicle for exploration.  She scurries about the apartment as though she is on her way to some exciting destination.  Of course, since she has yet to be indoctrinated into the goal orientation of our workaday world, our daughter takes great pleasure in the journey itself, stopping frequently during her sojourns to smell the roses (or, more accurately, to stuff a plant leaf into her mouth, bang on a chair, or try squeezing in between the wall and refrigerator).

Even at this young age Eléa is already exhibiting a great appreciation for fine literature.  Watching her carefully select books from the shelves (and then seeing her stuff them under the bookcase or couch), one might get the impression that she has not yet developed a discriminating mind.  We would like to think that it is simply a sign of her openness to different genres.  Eléa is probably like Sara Palin in this respect: she reads everything.  However, merely passing her eyes over the printed text is not enough for this eager little learner.  No, she feels compelled to deeply ingest (and digest) whatever literature she has chosen for her afternoon's reading.  Just yesterday her father stepped out of the room for a moment and, upon his return, found a sizable piece missing from the soggy cover of One Hundred Years of Solitude.  He is still not sure whether this is an indication of the critic's approval or disapproval.

Uncle Seren Comes to Visit and I turn 9 Months Old

This month has been busy.  Eléa continues to grow bigger (aka: fatter) and cuter (aka: cuter!).  She weighed in at 22 1/2 pounds at her nine month check up (95th percentile) and measured 28 inches long (75th percentile).  Eléa is eating more textured foods now and her new favorite is kale cherrios (check out the video).  There is also great video of Eléa's new favorite activity, brushing her teeth.

I had to leave Eléa for a 3 1/2 days for a prison visit and Uncle Seren and Tia Ariane were superstars in helping Luke out.  Eléa enjoyed her time with Uncle Seren and was especially impressed with his many gadgets.  Eléa has put in a request that Mami buy an Ipad.  Tia Ariane also taught Eléa some new tricks (check out the picture below).

Eight Months: New Looks

March brought some beloved visitors (aka: grandma and grandpa) and some looks from around the world (aka: nepal and korea).  Eléa also had to say goodbye to her first friend (we miss you Charlie!).

Eléa is keeping busy crawling everywhere and pulling up to standing on anything she can get her hands on.  She is also making many new sounds (aba, mama, gaga) and screams of joy (see video for a better understanding).  She has proven to be ticklish and a game of hide and seek brings loads of laughter.  Instead of having to entertain Eléa, she has definitely begun to seriously entertain us and we are enjoying her more than ever!
